I love this! Your point about Gothic aesthetics providing catharsis really resonates with me. I’ve always loved horror movies and have always been an anxious person, and one of the main reasons I enjoy them is that they let me experience my anxiety in a safe and even twistedly enjoyable way.

brilliant read!!! I think also the normalisation of alternative subcultures due to the lockdown making people find new ways to express themselves, and the values of those subcultures becoming more normalised as people have become more disillusioned with our current reality - has made it easier for people to find and accept gothic lifestyles
